Mulberry Fork Review

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

Welcome to Mulberry Fork Review's submissions page. Hopefully this means that you are only moments away from submitting an exceptional piece of prose. We are happy that you trust us enough to send your 'little darlings' out to play. This is, without a doubt, our favorite part of publishing a literary magazine and hosting literary competitions: Reading your work!

Just a word about reading fees before you read all the other blahdy blah. If reading fees aren’t your thing, we understand. However, there is an added benefit here at MFR...

There is a $8.00 reading fee for each submission. This gets you 1) a personal response whether your submission is accepted or not. 2) If your submission is accepted for publication, it will automatically be entered for the best of MFR which is a new venture for us. There are four Categories: Fiction, Flash Fiction, Nonfiction, and Prose Poetry. December 2019, a winner in each category will be selected and receive a prize of $500.

If if you want to take advantage of Priority Submissions which will get you a quick response, try our $20 Tip Jar https://mulberryforkreview.submittable.com/submit/26294/tip-jar-priority-submissions

So, what are we looking for? It's simple. We are looking for quality prose - both fiction and nonfiction. Any color. Any flavor. Any genre. Any style. There is no theme. Whether your prose emerges in the form of a short story, flash fiction, essay, lyrical essay, creative nonfiction or prose poetry, we are interested.

We want to publish stories with a distinctive voice, well-developed characters, and a strong sense of place. Send us work that is worth revisiting. We love stories and essays that stand up to scrutiny and reveal something new with each read. Send us prose poems that challenge the imagination with use of language; something that will capture the attention of our readers. Overuse of adverbs? Not so much.

Just a few words about general formatting and presentation which apply to all our submission categories: keep it simple. Standard font size, font color (black), and margins will do just fine. We understand if you feel that 30pt-Hot-Pink-Rage captures the essence of your story but it's awfully difficult to read. Double space, probably a good idea. All submissions must be in English, please. While we have no desire to be overly prescriptive OR proscriptive, don't send us hate-driven, racist, misogynistic submissions.

Simultaneous submissions are fine. Please let us know as soon as possible if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

We prefer previously unpublished material. If you are submitting previously published work, please let us know in your cover letter and make sure you hold the copyright.

Response time is 4 - 6 weeks.
